A Recent Job: Installing a Water Softener and Transforming a Home’s
Last week we fitted a new Harvey block‑salt water softener, a non‑electric twin‑cylinder system, for a customer who had finally had enough of limescale, dry skin, and constant cleaning. Like many homes across Reading’s hard‑water area, their taps, shower screens and appliances were showing all the usual signs: white chalky marks, rough surfaces, and a kettle that needed descaling every few weeks.
They asked us whether a softener would actually make a difference — and the short answer is yes. Once installed, the improvement is noticeable almost immediately.
We installed two of these compact, high‑efficiency softener, one in an outside cupboard and the other under the kitchen sink, connected directly to the incoming mains, and set up the bypass valves for easy servicing. Combi boilers — softened water keeps the domestic hot‑water plate heat exchanger clean, improving flow rate, temperature stability, and gas efficiency.
Unvented cylinders — softened water prevents scale on immersion heaters and heating coils, improving recovery times and reducing energy use.
Vented cylinders — softened water stops immersion heaters and coils furring up, keeping heat transfer efficient and lowering running costs.
Softened water does not go into the central‑heating circuit (radiators/primary boiler loop). That system is filled with untreated water plus inhibitor, as per manufacturer guidance and BS 7593.
By preventing limescale, softened water reduces:
gas usage for hot‑water production
wear on taps, shower valves, and appliances
breakdowns caused by blocked or restricted heat exchangers
spending on limescale removers and cleaning products
For homes in hard‑water areas, the savings often outweigh the running costs of the softener.
The customer told us the next day that their shower felt “completely different” — softer water, warmer feel, and no tightness on the skin afterwards. Clothes come out of the wash feeling softer, and the kettle stops building scale.
